Williamstown Lacrosse legend and part time WLC historian John “Keka” Butkiewicz found an interesting column in the Clutha Leader, Volume XLIV, Issue 82, 26 April 1918, Page 5.
When the members of the Williamstown (Melbourne) Lacrosse Club went to the war they took with them their lacrosse sticks, and they now use them as bomb propellers. The object of taking the sticks was to play lacrosse as opportunity offered, but, according to letters received by relatives in Williamstown, it was found that a bomb could be thrown, by using a lacrosse stick, a distance of about 50 yars, and that a skillful lacrosse player was almost sure of accuracy in the throw.
Below is the extract from the newspaper.
Dear Players, Parents and ALL supporters of the Williamstown Lacrosse Club,
Welcome to season 2022!
Every year, we as a club need to provide Club referees to help officiate our games on the weekend. It’s an important role that we need to fulfil as part of our Club’s responsibilities to the sport.
We would like ALL of our players from U16’s upwards to complete the exam and to be available to referee a game here and there throughout the year. The more of us that can complete the exam the more evenly we can distribute the games to all of the players. It is also open to any parents or club supporters who may wish to further their knowledge of the sport.
A match payment is paid to all accredited referees by Lacrosse Victoria. Williamstown Lacrosse Club matches this amount dollar for dollar for all of our Club referees. It is our intention that the full match payment will be paid to our club referees on a monthly basis. We would actively encourage all the members of our U16 junior’s team to complete the exam, where the benefits are twofold; earning some additional pocket money, whilst additionally gaining a better insight into the great game of lacrosse.
From a legal liability perspective, only accredited referees are able to officiate a lacrosse game. It is therefore a minimum requirement that the level 1 exam is successfully completed. The pass mark is 80%. Fortunately, the exam is open book with no time limits for completion.
Please see the links below to access the level 1 exam (and the current rules…..for all those who may have forgotten them or, generally choose to ignore them 😊)
Once you have completed the exam can you please forward me the certificate along with your mobile number.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

To all WLC Members, Family & Friends,
Like pretty much everything else in 2021, the Victorian lacrosse season started with plenty of promise, but ultimately didn’t end the way we’d hoped for. That said, all WLC Junior and Senior teams did manage to play two-thirds of the scheduled home and away games with some great individual and team performances along the way. We were also able to take advantage of our newly refurbished clubrooms, floodlights and barrier netting. Most importantly we welcomed a number of new players and their families to our great game and Club thereby contributing to another successful season at WLC.
In July the announcement from Tokyo that the International Olympic Committee had granted six-a-side Lacrosse official Olympic recognition provided some much needed good news for the development of lacrosse both within Australia and on the global stage. Having produced numerous Australian national players over many years WLC eagerly look forward to seeing some of our “young guns” represent Australia at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 when lacrosse is expected to make its full return to Olympic competition.
As has been the case for 2020 and 2021, planning ahead has been a headache given the COVID uncertainty. However, the Victorian lacrosse community has been as resilient as ever and is laying the foundations for a successful return in 2022.
With this in mind, and with light at the end of the Melbourne lockdown tunnel, the WLC Committee felt the time was right to let everyone know that there’s plenty of on and off field lacrosse events being planned by WLC and Lacrosse Victoria (LV) between now and the commencement of the 2022 season.
WLC Junior Presentation
We are planning on having a catch up to celebrate our junior teams achievements. While a date is yet to be set, this will most likely take place on a weekend in the Botanic Gardens. If restrictions prevent us catching up face-to-face, then the Junior Coaches and Co-Ordinators will be in touch soon with details for an online Awards Night.
WLC Family Day & Senior Presentation
Although we won’t be able to celebrate as a Club as in previous years, we will still look to set a day to get together for a long overdue catch-up and to thank everyone for their contributions in 2021.
As part of Family Day get together we also plan to announce the Best & Fairest winners for each of Club’s Senior Teams.
WLC Annual General Meeting, Committee & Life Membership Nominations
The 2021 Annual General meeting will be scheduled for late November or early December (date and venue TBC).
In addition to the presentation of our 2021 Annual Report, the WLC Committee is seeking nominations from members for:
- President, Secretary, Treasurer and General Committee Members; and
- Life Membership award.
All nominations including a brief submission in support of Life Membership nominations should be emailed to the firstname.lastname@example.org.
Lacrosse Victoria Summer Competitions
Lacrosse Victoria has a number of events and competitions planned, albeit final details remain subject to restrictions being relaxed. As at the time of writing, LV is looking to lock in the following:
- Olympic Six-a-Side Lacrosse – likely to be held as a weekend tournament in the lead up to Christmas, with a full series to commence in February 2022.
- Box Lacrosse – the newly constructed all-weather box lacrosse court at PJ Lynch Reserve at Altona is ready to go. Vic Box Lacrosse is continuing to plan for a return to competition the week of 8th November with the season to run to the end of February 2022. The league is looking to run Junior, Senior and Masters Competitions. To register click on https://www.trybooking.com/BUOIJ (note: registrations close midnight 29th October 2021). For further details check out the Victoria Box Lacrosse Facebook page.
Midweek Sixes at the Fearon – In parallel with the LV competitions above, WLC is also looking to establish a night during the week over summer to establish some pick up Sixes games for all ages, which might provide a good opportunity for some parents to try lax out and chase your kids around…
Watch this Space and keep your eye on the Gold & the Blue!

- Williamstown Lacrosse Club 2021 Return to Lacrosse Conditions
Anyone attending a WLC training session must read and understand LV’s 2021 Return to Lacrosse Conditions. These conditions must be read in conjunction with 2021 WLC Notice to All Players, Parents, & Spectators set out in the attachment below, as they contain vital information for all WLC participants to adhere to in order to return to lacrosse from 2nd February 2021.
In order to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our members and the community more broadly, it is critical that everyone attending training strictly adhere to these conditions as a failure to do so could result in HBCC removing access to facilities. Additionally, non-compliance could result in serious health implications, while legal and financial penalties may be levied on the club and any individual if they are in breach.

Like most organisations in 2020, Williamstown Lacrosse Club experienced a very unusual and tough year with no lacrosse or social activities being possible. That said, and consistent with our long term strategy, WLC is keen to bounce back in 2021 to again play a major role for lacrosse in Australia and more importantly within Victoria. As a club, we are focused on growing lacrosse and ensuring we lead from the front in all aspects whilst we continue our success on and off the field.
In 2021 Williamstown Lacrosse Club wants to continue to GROW THE GAME and raise the bar with our Lacrosse development.
We want to continue to assist with the development in local schools and our within our community via clinics and lacrosse camps.
The 100 CLUB was created five years ago and has been a vital part of achieving this goal. The 100 CLUB allows us to assist our juniors and raise the funds needed for the club to attract juniors from local schools and provide the kids in our community with the opportunity to begin their sporting journey via Lacrosse with the Williamstown Lacrosse Club.
As a member of the Williamstown Lacrosse Club family, we would like to invite you to be part of the annual ‘100 CLUB’ and as a member, you will receive the following:
– Complimentary first drink each Saturday (Tap Beer, Wine or Soft Drink)
– Acknowledgment of contribution on the 100 CLUB honour board
– Invitation to a Game Day BBQ during the season
Thank you for taking the time to read the above invitation for the proposed 100 CLUB.
If you wish to join the 100 CLUB or know someone who may wish to contribute you can make your donation to the clubs bank account (Please reference your Name and 100 Club).

The 2020 season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Working in the background, the committee managed to continue pushing for the finalisation of a few long-term projects & capital works thanks primarily to Simon Brown and Carl Radford’s work.
We are pleased to announce our 2019-2020 Annual Report is now available for download. 2020 WLC Annual Report
We look forward to leaving 2020 behind us and seeing everyone in the newly renovated clubrooms in 2021!
